Upcoming Event - Prison By Any Other Name

WaterFire Symposium presents an online virtual event with the coauthors of Prison By Any Other Name: The Harmful Consequences of Popular Reform on Thursday November 19 with local RI directly impacted organizers from Formerly Incarcerated Union RI and DARE

WaterFire Symposium presents Prison by Any Other Name: The Harmful Consequences of Popular Reforms co-authors Maya Schenwar and Victoria Law in conversation with local RI directly impacted organizers, Cherie Cruz of Formerly Incarcerated Union RI and Arya Serenity of DARE Behind the Walls Committee. Join us for a discussion of the pitfalls of popularly proposed prison reforms.

We will be streaming the Zoom event on WaterFire Providence's Facebook page on 11/19 at 8pm via Facebook LIVE. A Zoom link will be sent out to folks who RSVP (in advance!) via the Eventbrite link.

PRISON BY ANY OTHER NAME is a crucial indictment of widely embraced “alternatives to incarceration” that exposes how many of these new approaches actually widen the net of punishment and surveillance. A conversation between the authors and local RI directly impacted organizers will situate the book's discussion of reform and “alternatives to incarceration” within a local RI context—understanding how "alternatives to incarceration" such as parole and probation impact our local communities right here in RI. As a state recently known for having the highest percent of people per capital on probation and parole, Rhode Island’s use of “alternatives” such as long probation/parole sentences has fed recidivism rates through “technical violations”—creating a revolving door of incarceration.
